What do an arcade cabinet and creative technology have in common?

Since 2002, I have held various roles in IT and business, from web developer to business analyst and entrepreneur. My career has generally revolved around optimising business processes, and that experience has given me insight into how technology and creativity reinforce each other. Where technology and creativity intersect, fascinating projects are almost guaranteed to emerge. For my own passions, it has always been a struggle between the two. With web development, to my delight, I could combine both: design on the one hand, technology on the other. Artificial intelligence also brings the two together: the most innovative technical solutions often emerge after an in-depth creative thought process.

Outside office hours, however, I try to limit screen time and discovered a passion for woodworking. Even when I was young, I greatly admired technically skilled peers whenever they came home from school with beautiful craftsmanship. I have deep respect for craftspeople who excel at their trade, who can create something with their hands that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Their skills remind us that, although we live in a digital age, the art of craftsmanship still plays an essential role in our society, and that creativity and technology go hand in hand there too.

This admiration for craftsmanship sparked my interest in exploring new territory. Professionally, I spent the past year academically upskilling in artificial intelligence, but personally I also try to pursue personal growth, which resulted in my latest hobby project: an arcade cabinet - a touch of nostalgia, a fun source of enjoyment and connection for family and friends, but above all a serious DIY challenge.

My professional world was never far away, though: I largely left the design of the arcade cabinet to Generative A.I. (apologies to my connections in the creative sector). I looked up tutorials on YouTube, and whenever I could not find an answer to my questions about electronics or my new router, ChatGPT was there to get me out of trouble.

My professional expertise, which mainly consists of software applications or AI models, is abstract and contrasts sharply with the process of creating something tangible, but both are very valuable and can complement each other. It shows that by embracing modern technologies, we can push our creative boundaries and continue developing ourselves in ways that were previously unimaginable. In that way, hobbies can provide new insights into professional disciplines and vice versa.

I am very curious about the hobbies you pursue alongside your career. Do you combine creative aspects of your hobbies with skills from your work? Feel free to share your experiences in the comments below.
